FREED – Female Re-enactors of Distinction Charlotte Scott – “A Friend of Lincoln” When freed woman Charlotte Scott learned of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination in 1865, she felt his loss deeply and personally. So much so that she decided such a great man and friend to the Negro must have a monument so that he would be ever remembered.

Female RE-Enactors of Distinction (FREED), an auxiliary group, established under the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum, is committed to accurately depict the role of African Americans, including the U.S. Colored Troops and their families during the U.S. Civil War.
